Manganese dioxide was used in glass formulas from approximately 1860 - 1915. These pieces started as clear glass but when they were exposed to sunlight, it discolored them purple! The formula was changed around 1915 to prevent this from happening.
The antique glass pieces we cut are self-collected in or around Luning, NV! Luning was a mining boom town that started in 1882 and burned to the ground in 1884. It was rebuilt after the fire. The bottle and can dumps in the area were used from 1882 all the way until the 1960s/70s.
